Today marks the third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete comes from the Latin for Rejoice, the first word in today’s Catholic mass from Philippians 4:4-6 and Psalm 85:1:
Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete. Modestia vestra nota sit omnibus hominibus: Dominus enim prope est. Nihil solliciti sitis: sed in omni oratione et obsecratione cum gratiarum actione petitiones vestræ innotescant apud Deum. Benedixisti Domine terram tuam: avertisti captivitatem Jacob.

Let your forbearance be known to all, for the Lord is near at hand; have no anxiety about anything, but in all things, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. The third Sunday of Advent focuses on joy. Renowned theologian Henri Nouwen was quick to distinguish joy from happiness, saying:
“Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing — sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death — can take that love away.
“Joy is not the same as happiness. We can be unhappy about many things, but joy can still be there because it comes from the knowledge of God’s love for us. We are inclined to think that when we are sad we cannot be glad, but in the life of a God-centered person, sorrow and joy can exist together. That isn’t easy to understand, but when we think about some of our deepest life experiences, such as being present at the birth of a child or the death of a friend, great sorrow and great joy are often seen to be parts of the same experience. Often we discover the joy in the midst of the sorrow.”

For the third Sunday, we light the rose-colored candle in the Advent wreath, along with the two purple candles from previous weeks. Today we joyfully look forward to the Lord’s second coming.

Gideon’s Spring. Judges 7 tells Gideon’s story; here, the Lord whittled down Gideon’s army from 10,000 to 300 men. The Lord used these 300 men to deliver Midian into Gideon’s hands.
