Ash Wednesday

Of the liturgical church calendar, I miss the Lenten services (most notably Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday) the most. I attended a Presbyterian church for many years, both as a child and as a young adult, and only grew to appreciate the liturgy during my later years of attendance. The solemnity of these services reminds me of the seriousness of my sin, and stands in stark contrast to the glory of Easter Sunday. I appreciate Easter’s joyous proclamation, Christ the Lord is risen today!, that much more after today’s ashes and Maundy Thursday’s stripping of the church.

Ash Wednesday: Administration of the Ashes

Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10

²⁰ We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. ²¹ God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
